IMAP settings for Thunderbird

Here are the instructions for configuring IMAP in Thunderbird.

Note: If you have a POP account configured in Thunderbird, you will need to create a new account using the following steps:

  1. Open Thunderbird.
  2. Click on Tools.
  3. Click Account Settings…
  4. Select Add Account...
  5. In New Account Setup, select Email account.
  6. Click Continue.
  7. Enter your name in the Your Name text box.
  8. Click Continue.
  9. Enter your email address in the Email Address text box.
  10. Click Continue.
  11. Under Server Information, select IMAP.
  12. Click Continue.
  13.  Enter mail.psu.edu in the Incoming Server text box.
  14. Click Continue.
  15. You should see your user  id (i.e. xyz123)  in the Incoming User Name text box.
  16. Click Continue.
  17. Enter a name for your account in the Account Name text box. (Default is your email address.)
  18. Click Continue.
  19. Review the settings that appear in the Congratulations! window.
  20. Click Done to finish and exit the Account Wizard.

To finish setting up your IMAP settings, do the following:
  1. Click Server Settings.
  2. Click on Tools.
  3. Click Account Settings…
  4. Type mail.psu.edu in the Server Name box.
  5. Type your Access Account user id into the User Name box.
  6. Under Security Settings, select the SSL radio button in the Security Settings box.
  7. Make sure the Port is 993.
  8. Under Server Settings, click the Advanced button.
  9. Type ~/mail into the IMAP Server Directory box.
  10. Uncheck the Server supports folders that contain sub-folders and messages box.
  11. Click the OK button to close the Advanced Account Settings box.
  12. Click the OK button to close the Account Settings box.
If you will be using this computer to send mail from a third-party ISP (off campus and not PSU dial-up access) you will also need to set up Authenticated SMTP.
