This can happen if the guestbook.pl was uploaded using binary mode instead of ASCII. The guestbook.pl needs to be in unix format.
It can be converted by uploading it again in SSH Secure File Transfer after setting it to "ASCII" mode.
1) Under the "Operation" menu, select "File Transfer Mode" and then "ASCII".
2) Upload the file.
3) Afterwards, you can go back to "Auto Select" in that same menu for best results with most other files.
