Converting from Eudora to Thunderbird on Windows

If Thunderbird was installed on your computer by your department’s IT staff but your Eudora settings have not yet been imported, please skip to Migrating your Eudora Account to Thunderbird section. Otherwise, please start at step 1 of Installing Thunderbird.

Installing Thunderbird

  1. Double click on the Thunderbird setup file.
  2. Click Next when the Welcome to the Mozilla Thunderbird Setup Wizard window appears.
  3. You must accept the License Agreement for the installation to proceed by selecting the radio button next to I accept the terms in the License Agreement.
  4. Click Next.
  5. Select the radio button Standard.
  6. Click Next.
  7. Now complete the setup by launching Mozilla Thunderbird.
    Note: Make sure the box is checked next to Launch Mozilla Thunderbird now.
  8. Click Finish.
  9. When the Import Wizard opens,select the radio button next to Eudora.
  10. Click Next to import your mail settings.
    Note: The Import Wizard window will show the progress of the items being imported.
  11. Once the Import Wizard completes, the Thunderbird Local Folders window will be visible.
  12. Right click Eudora Settings.
  13. In the Account Settings window, change the Account Name to your name or user id.
  14. In the Default Identity section, enter your name and your e-mail address in the appropriate boxes.

 

Migrating Your Eudora Account to Thunderbird

If Thunderbird was installed on your computer by your department’s IT Staff but your Eudora settings have not yet been imported you will need to do the following:

  1. Double-click on the Thunderbird icon on your desktop.
  2. Choose Eudora when the Import Wizard prompts you to importing settings from Outlook Express, Eudora, or “Don’t import anything.”
  3. Click on Next.
  4. Click on Finish w hen the Import Wizard screen says that the import has completed.
  5. Next, you will be prompted to use Thunderbird as the default client for E-Mail, Newsgroups, and RSS Feeds.
  6. Click OK to accept the defaults.
  7. To import your mail into Thunderbird, click on Tools.
  8. Next, click on Import.
  9. Choose Mail.
  10. Click on Next.
  11. Choose Eudora.
  12. Click on Next.
  13. Use the Browse for Folder window locate your mail directory by:
    1. Click on the My Computer icon.
    2. Next, click on the C: drive.
    3. Now browse to location of the mail file.
      Note: The mail file/folder is usually c:\mail or C:\Documents and Settings\ghalpin.CLA\Application Data\Qualcomm\Eudora. You will to substitute your User ID where ghalpin is listed.
  14. You will be presented will a summary of the messages imported.
  15. Next click on Finish.

Your Eudora mail will now be imported into your Thunderbird e-mail client but it will not appear in your Inbox. Instead, it will appear in a sub folder called Eudora Mail.
