Authenticated Simple Mail Transfer Protocol (authsmtp) allows for greater security in sending messages over the SMTP channel. When enabled in the user's email client, authsmtp requires users to enter their password before being allowed to send messages.
If you are trying to use the IMAP service from off campus, you must use an authsmtp configuration.
