Installing Symantec AntiVirus on Windows Vista

Symantec Anti-Virus for Windows Vista is available for download from the ITS Downloads website at:

https://downloads.its.psu.edu/

Please ensure that you download the correct version of the software (32-bit or 64-bit) depending on the configuration of your computer system. One you finish the download you should see an executable file 'SAV102v32' or 'SAV102v64' depending on the file you download.

Windows Vista contains a firewall that is enabled by default. To ensure successful installation of Symantec on Windows Vista the default firewall settings in Vista have to be changed to allow Symantec AntiVirus components to communicate with each other. The Windows Firewall should be configured before you install Symantec AntiVirus software.

If you have already installed Symantec and it is not working, please uninstall it.

To  uninstall please follow the instructions below:

1. Click on the Start button in the bottom left hand corner to open your Start Menu.

2. Click on Control Panel in the Start menu.

3. When the Control Panel window opens click on the Uninstall a program option under the Programs category. If you are using the Classic View of the Control Panel double-click on the Programs and Features icon to access the Uninstall a program option.

4. In the list of programs that appears, please remove all programs with Symantec and/or Norton in their name.

To configure Windows Firewall to allow the installation Symantec AntiVirus File and Printer Sharing have to be enabled.
To Enable File and Printer Sharing please follow the instructions below:

1. Click on the Start button in the bottom left hand corner to open your Start Menu.

2. Click on Control Panel in the Start menu.

3. In the Control Panel window, click Security.

4. In the Security window, click Windows Firewall.

5. In the Windows Firewall window, please click on Change Settings.

6. In the Windows Firewall Settings box, click on the Exceptions tab at the top.

7. Check the box in front of File and Printer Sharing.

8. Click OK.

Now, double click on the installation file for Symantec Anti-Virus and follow the instructions to install Symantec Anti-Virus.

Note: Symantec AntiVirus also automatically modifies Windows Firewall during installation on Window Vista to allow specific processes access to the network and the Internet. You are not required to make any further modifications.
