Web FAQ 4.04. Can I access the log file for my departmental home page?

Document Actions

The server does not create a separate log file for each directory; therefore, the log file is extremely large. In order for a department to access the logs for its directories, it would have to scan through the entire log file and extract the relevant entries. If we allowed every department maintaining pages on our server to do this, severe performance problems would result. We provide a "logscan" folder for departmental sites by request only. Inquiries should be directed to webmaster@psu.edu.

Departments using a separate virtual domain do get their own logs automatically.  These are stored in the Penn State Access Account Storage Space (PASS) in the folder (syntax used for the different ways to connect are given below):

PASS Gateway (Windows): \\win.pass.psu.edu\pass\services\www\logs\httpd\name.of.domain.psu.edu\
PASS Gateway (Mac): smb://smb.pass.psu.edu/pass/services/www/logs/httpd/name.of.domain.psu.edu/
SSH/PASS Explorer: /:/services/www/logs/httpd/name.of.domain.psu.edu/

(Where "name.of.domain.psu.edu" is the name of the domain. The "httpd" folder is really "httpsd" for secure domains.)

For more information about departmental Web space and virtual domain hosting, refer to http://aset.its.psu.edu/accounts/dept.html.

Alternatively, you could write a CGI script to create your own log file for each month (for details regarding CGI scripts, see FAQ section 5). An example of this can be accessed at:

http://www.free-scripts.net/cgi/accesslogging.shtml

After you find the script that you would like to use, go to FAQ 5.3 for installation instructions.
