Web FAQ 2.05. How do I make changes to my personal home page?

Q. How do I make changes to my personal home page?
A. In three steps. First, connect to PASS; second, edit your Web files; third, save and upload changes back to your site.
Please read the answer to this question and FAQ 2.4 before you begin, including the Helpful Tips section .
- Connect to the PSU Personal server so that you can transfer files to and from your Web space. See FAQ 2.4 for information on the preferred methods of transferring files.
- Copy the file index.html from your www folder/directory to your machine or diskette. We strongly recommend that you make an extra copy of this file so that you have one copy to work on, and one as a backup.
- Edit your file index.html with any text editor (such as BBEdit on a Macintosh), HTML editor (such as Netscape Composer), or word processor (such as Microsoft Word). (If you use a word processor, make sure your file is saved as text only, with line breaks, if that is an option.) Please see the Web publishing guide for on-line HTML guides.
- After you are finished editing your file, copy the file index.html into your www directory using the recommendations at FAQ 2.4. You should now be able to see the changes in your Web page, but may have to use the "Reload" feature in your Web browser in order to view the changes that you made.
Warning: Files having the same names as those you put into your directory can be overwritten by the incoming files, depending on the method of file transfer you use.
We recommend that you continue to use the name index.html for your home page file name. You can also add other pages to your Web site by using any text editor, HTML editor, or word processor, to create new files (make sure you do not name any of your new files index.html or you can overwrite your home page file). Then, place the new files into your www directory by following the recommendations in FAQ 2.4. You can edit your home page file, index.html, to include links to the other new files.
After you place your file, look at your page and click on the links to make sure they are all working correctly. If possible, ask a couple of friends to look at your Web site on their computers/browsers and let you know if they spot any problems.
