Web FAQ 2.04. How do I transfer files to and from my Web space?
Web FAQ → Section 2: Using ITS Web Space → 2.4.
Q. How do I transfer files to and from my Web space?
A. Use the various file transfer methods for PASS.
Personal Web space is stored in the "www" folder of Penn State Access Account holders' Penn State Access Account Storage Space (PASS) home folders. Some other types of Web space are stored in other folders of PASS as indicated below.
- The PASS Gateway: The preferred method is the PASS Gateway. The PASS Gateway allows all Penn State Access Account holders to connect to PASS as if it were another disk drive on the local computer. For more information, see Penn State Access Account Storage Space (PASS) and Instructions for Mounting the PASS Gateway. Note that if you are not using a Penn State network to connect to the Internet, such as a Penn State dial-up connection, you must use the VPN client before connecting to the PASS Gateway. As of Fall 2004, all Penn State Access Account holders have access to at least 500MB of file storage space, and since Fall 2005 may request up to 1 GB of free space via the "Directory Quotas" link on https://www.work.psu.edu/. Your PASS space includes your personal Web space and if you have an ITS UNIX Cluster account, your home directory (folder). It may also contain the "My Documents" and possibly other folders used in some computer labs. Many computer labs connect to the PASS Gateway automatically.
- The PASS Explorer: You can browse and upload/download files over the Web via the PASS Explorer, which is also available in the PASS channel of the Penn State Portal. The Introduction to the PASS Explorer provides detailed instructions.
- Secure FTP (SSH) clients--SSH for Windows, MacSSH for Mac--are available for download from downloads.its.psu.edu. ASET provides instructions for these clients.
Other methods using (clear-text) FTP may still be available for accessing non-ITS web space. However, note that FTP does not transmit your information securely.
Please note: as of June 3, 2002, you will no longer be able to transfer files to your Personal Web space using methods with FTP that are not completely secure. (You can read the announcement of this change at http://css.its.psu.edu/news/alerts/ftp_announce.html.) Only Secure FTP (SSH based) is supported.
