Libraries Automatic Integration in Canvas

Beginning fall 2016, all Canvas courses will have a link to Library Resources on the Course Navigation Menu (no action by instructors or designers required):

1. Select this link, and you will see library guides and reserves associated with a course, and a link to Ask A Librarian online reference.

2. The first link on the left in the image above is the Library Guide, which is accessed by clicking the title. The guide displays within Canvas, and will adjust to any resolution. If no specific library guide is associated with a course, a guide to general library services will display. If you need a different guide than the one displayed, please contact your librarian subject specialist.

3. The second link provides reserves for the course. Links to both e-reserves and listings of physical reserves will be shown. They are generated by requesting or renewing reserves for the course. If no reserves are associated with the course, this section is absent.

4. In the image above, you can see a reserves list with a reading selected (labeled as: course title/instructor/semester). To view an e-reserve, click the title, then click the file(s) link. A pdf or link to licensed resources will open in a new window.

Libraries Manual Integration in Canvas

The Manual Integration Tool in Canvas allows you to drop the library resources page, or specific items into a variety of locations within a course. Note: this level of integration is opt-in, not automatic.

To add content to modules or content pages: 

1. Resources are added to modules by adding a new item using the plus sign for the specific module.

2. Resources are added to text pages by using the blue Library Reserves and Guides icon in the editor:

3. Next, select Add External tool, then choose Library Resources or Library Reserves and Guides.

4. Selecting “Library Resources” will include the entire Library Resources page.

5. Selecting “Library Reserves and Guides” will embed a guide, guide page, or reserves list at specific locations throughout the course.

6. The following box will appear whenever this option is selected.

For a Guide:

LibGuides Site should always be “Library Guides- psu.libguides.com”
• For Content Type please select one of the LibGuide options.
Guide should be the name of the guide. You can use the search box for your convenience.
Guide Page is the particular section you decide to include–this is not necessary to select and can be left as is.
