ORIS: Supported Systems

The Office of Research Information Systems (ORIS) is organizationally located within the Vice President for Research (VPR) structure at University Park (http://www.research.psu.edu/oris). ORIS develops, maintains and supports the below systems that are used by a variety of end-users (University Officials, executives, faculty, staff, students and some users with FOPS accounts) across the entire University system related to research compliance and administration. ORIS works collaboratively with related research compliance offices and teams at the Office for Research Protections (ORP), Office of Sponsored Programs (OSP) and at Penn State Health (e.g., CTO, ORA, HSPO, Research Informatics, RQA, etc.) in determining development priorities and support needs.

myResearch Portal

  • Purpose: Used by all Penn State investigators to view administrative data associated with their research which includes proposals, awards, protocols, authorizations, conflict of interest disclosures, and financial accounts
  • Used by: Researchers (faculty, staff, students), research administrators
  • Login page: http://myresearch.psu.edu
  • Support: myresearch@psu.edu
  • Access: Web-based, WebAccess authentication
  • Browser requirements: None
  • Integrations: myResearch Portal references and displays data from PRAMS, SIMS, CATS IRB, CATS IACUC, IBIS, COINS, LDAP, CPR
  • Common support requests: None

COINS - Conflict of INterest System

  • Purpose: Used to submit Significant Financial or Business Interest Disclosures on a yearly and/or on an as-needed basis as required (policy RP06)
  • Used by: Researchers (faculty, staff, students), University Officials, research administrators
  • Login page: http://coins.psu.edu
  • Support: coinsadmin@psu.edu
  • Access: Web-based, WebAccess authentication
  • Browser requirements: Chrome or Firefox (IE is not recommended)
  • Integrations: SIMS IAF, myResearch Portal
  • Common support requests:
    • Outdated browsers cause issues with the vended software
    • FA confusion with Hershey users

CATS IRB - Centralized Application Tracking System for Institutional Review Board

  • Purpose: Used to submit and reference protocol information submitted to the IRB for use of human participants in research (policy RP03)
  • Used by: Researchers (faculty, staff, students), research administrators
  • Login page: http://irb.psu.edu
  • Support: irbadmin@psu.edu
  • Access: Web-based, WebAccess authentication
  • Browser requirements: Chrome or Firefox (IE is not recommended)
  • Integrations: STAR, StudyFinder, myResearch Portal, LDAP, PRAMS, IAF
  • Common support requests:
    • Request account access at Hershey – contact: irb-hspo@psu.edu
    • Request account access at rest of University – contact: irb-orp@psu.edu
    • Adobe Acrobat/Adobe Reader document opening and printing issues
    • FOPS accounts cannot submit (purposeful)


CATS IACUC - Centralized Application Tracking System for Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee

  • Purpose: Used to submit and reference protocol information submitted to the IACUC for use of animals as subjects of research (policy RP04)
  • Used by: Researchers (faculty, staff, students), research administrators

PRAMS - Protocol Review and Management System

  • Purpose: Used to submit and reference protocol information submitted to the IACUC (policy RP04), IBC (policy SY24), and UIC (policy SY14) committees – This system is being phased out by CATS IRB, CATS IACUC and CATS Safety but is still in use
  • Used by: Researchers (faculty, staff, students), research administrators

  • Access: Web-based, WebAccess authentication, requires PSU internet connection (on-campus or VPN)
  • Browser requirements: None
  • Integrations: myResearch Portal, citi.org, LDAP, IAF, CATS IRB, CATS IACUC
  • Common support requests:
    • Issues with VPN connection
    • Users with FOPS accounts need to be on PSU network to complete and submit


SIMS - Strategic Information Management System

  • Purpose: Allows for the budgeting, internal form processing, submission, negotiation, and reporting of research proposal and award information based on financial and non-financial grants and contracts.
  • Used by: Researchers (faculty, staff, students), Research Administrators, Compliance Officers, Financial Officers, University Officials

OHACP – Occupational Health Assessment for Animal Care Personnel

  • Purpose: Used by animal care personnel to enroll in Penn State’s Occupational Health and Safety Program to identify any health conditions that could be aggravated or worsened by exposure to animals through work, study or research conducted under the auspices of PSU
  • Used by: Researchers (faculty, staff, students), research administrators

System Status

  • Purpose: To provide up to date information about the status of the following ORIS systems: CATS IRB, COINS, MyResearch Portal and CATS IACUC – STAR is also included
  • Used by: Researchers (faculty, staff, students), research administrators
  • Login page: http://systemstatus.research.psu.edu (each system that uses this page for status updates also has a link to it somewhere on their site – usually in the footer)
  • Support is handled through the systems that are referenced on the site
  • Access: Web-based, WebAccess authentication
